26 February 2020
- A report by NHS Providers shows how NHS specialised services are adapting to a changing environment to deliver world class and innovative care for patients and service users.
- Specialised services: transforming delivery for patients is the latest in the Provider Voices series, which shares the opinions of leaders from trusts and the wider health and care sector on key issues.
- Around 17% of the total NHS budget is committed to funding treatment for patients with conditions defined as rare or complex. This report looks at the key role specialised services play in delivering the ambitions of the long term plan.
The report features eight interviews and covers the following themes:
- The relationship between specialised services and system working
- Making commissioning work for specialised services
- Improving the patient experience
- Investing appropriately in building capacity to meet the demand for care
- Research, innovation and technology
The interviews highlight the challenges that specialised services face in adapting to new system structures and commissioning arrangements. They also reflect on the key contribution providers of specialised services play in supporting innovation, deploying new treatments and harnessing digital technology.
The director of policy and strategy at NHS Providers, Miriam Deakin said:
"The NHS is working towards delivering on the aspirations set out in the long term plan to ensure that patients receive the world class care that they deserve.
"Providers of specialised services are often uniquely placed to lead and support significant improvements in patient care. There is a real desire among health and care leaders to drive innovation forward and transform delivery in these services, as demonstrated in today's report."
